New Course Notification - Marine Confined Space

Overview
This refresher course prepares anyone working in or around confined spaces to recognize, evaluate, and control the environment of a confined space. Presented with graphics, text, and complete narration, the course defines a confined space and explains how to recognize and understand atmospheric and physical hazards within confined spaces. The user learns about qualitative and quantitative methods of measurements used in evaluate confined spaces, and how that relates to safe entry. Finally, learner are taught the precautions necessary to maintain safe entry, work, and exit conditions within a Maritime confined space. 26 interactions actively involve the learner in the training. Lesson interactions provide the learner opportunities to apply what he or she has learned. The computer assesses the learner’s level of understanding of all learning objectives. When the learner answers a question incorrectly the computer provides remedial instruction and reviews the material until the learner can answer correctly. All questions in this course are fully narrated. Narrations enhance comprehension and are welcome support for learners with reading skill deficits and when English is the learner’s second language.

Performance Objectives
This course will measure mastery on each of the following performance objectives:

* Recognize a confined space.
o List characteristics of a confined space.
o Define entry.
o Recognize the hazards in confined spaces.
o Agree to never rely on sense of smell to detect chemical vapors.
o State the normal amount of oxygen in air.
o Explain why oxygen deficiency’s considered greatest atmospheric hazard.
* Evaluate confined spaces for safe entry.
o Identify persons authorized to perform initial testing.
o Name persons authorized to perform subsequent maintenance testing.
o List the areas necessary to test for gases in a confined space.
o Select the action to take when testing reveals oxygen deficiency, or toxic gases or vapors within a confined space.
o Recognize the safety range of the Lower Explosive Limit.
o List the effects of chemical toxicity.
o Define the Threshold Limit Value.
o Appraise conditions within confined spaces.
o Identify hazardous gases within a confined space.
* Work safely within a confined space.
o Explain why ventilation is important.
o Choose the process dangerous to be completed within a confined space.
o Recognize when standby personnel can safely enter a confined space.
o Agree that rescuers must be trained and follow established emergency procedures.

o Agree that facial hair is not allowed when wearing a respirator.
o Explain why chemical filters are the least effective type of respirators
